Quick Takes: Three Things You Should Know About This Month

Print Article

1.    Background Checks For All Staff and Faculty Coming Soon

Last year, Pennsylvania Act 153 of 2014 was signed into law. This Act requires, among other things, that employees and volunteers of schools, colleges, and universities who have “direct contact” with minors (including college and university students who are under 18 years of age) undergo a set of three (3) background checks, identified below.

In view of the number of Lehigh University students who are minors, and the number of other non-student minors frequently present on our campus for various educational, athletics, and community outreach programs, the University has determined that all faculty and staff must complete the following background checks:

  • Pennsylvania State Police Access to Criminal History (“PATCH” or Act 34 Background Check)
  • Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 151 Child Abuse Background Check)
  • Federal Criminal History Record Information (Act 24 Federal / FBI Criminal History Background Check)

Upon being hired, certain background checks may have been completed on your behalf.  However, any such checks were different from the required checks identified above.

You should have received an email memo recently with more information. In the coming months, you’ll receive your individual invitation to complete this process. Please remember: Act 153 is now the law in Pennsylvania. Lehigh is obliged to comply and your cooperation is essential.

2.    Use Your Floating Holidays First!

The new fiscal year starts July 1, 2015. With it comes your new year of paid time off benefits. For the 2015-2016 fiscal year, that includes four (4) “floating holidays,” which are days you can use for any purpose.

It’s important to note that floating holidays don’t carry over from fiscal year to fiscal year. That’s why our advice is to always use your floating holidays first! For example, if you have a summer vacation planned in July or August, use those floating holidays for the first four days of your trip.

More information about leave benefits can be found on the HR website.
