Hidden Benefits Gems: Long Term Care Insurance

Print Article

This month, we’re taking a look at Lehigh’s voluntary group long term care insurance offering from Genworth. This is a form of insurance that was specifically requested by many staff and faculty during the Benefits Allocation Review that took place over the past several years.

Why Buy Long Term Care Insurance?

No one wants to think about the possibility that his or her future will be one with less personal independence. But the truth is that many of us will need long term care services for everyday activities at home or in a facility at some point in our lives. Did you know that the median cost for these kinds of services in Pennsylvania is $3,813 per month?

Assistance with everyday activities isn’t covered by disability or health insurance. Government programs aren’t always a possibility, depending on your circumstances. Without long term care insurance, the cost will end up coming out of your savings.

What is Covered?

If you purchase Lehigh’s group long term care insurance, the plan can reimburse you up to your plan limits for the costs of assistance with everyday activities. These include bathing, continence, dressing, eating, toileting, and transferring in and out of a bed, wheelchair or chair. It also covers substantial supervision needed due to a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s disease.

You become eligible to use your insurance when you need assistance with two or more of the activities listed above and that need is expected to last at least 90 days. A licensed health care professional must confirm your condition, and these services must be part of your plan of care.

How Does It Work?

New employees within their first 30 days of employment can enroll in the plan without medical underwriting depending on age and coverage choice. Employees who have worked at Lehigh for more than 30 days will need to complete some additional enrollment steps.

There are three factors to consider when selecting the coverage option that works best for your circumstances:

1.  Choose A Monthly Benefit
This is the maximum amount you can be reimbursed for covered expenses. Genworth offers several levels.

2.  Choose A Total Coverage Amount
This is the total amount that will be available to you over the lifetime of your coverage. Again, Genworth offers various options, and these are tied to the monthly coverage level you select.

3.  Choose A Benefit Increase Option
To protect your coverage against the rising cost of care, you can select an automatic increase that compounds every year, or choose to buy more coverage over time.
