Traveling to 250 events, making 170 presentations about investing and retirement planning. It’s all in a year’s work for Lisa Fulco, Associate Financial Consultant for the Field Consulting Group at TIAA-CREF. “I love what I do,” she explained. “I’m able to guide people to making sound and smart financial decisions, to empower them to secure their future.”

Lisa’s travel schedule will bring her to Lehigh October 8 and 9 to present two financial planning workshops. She’ll also provide help desk sessions on those days. The workshops and help desk sessions are open to all benefits eligible faculty and staff.

Spotlight caught up with Lisa while she was en route to yet another client recently. We asked her about her background and what people can expect from her visit.

About Lisa

Lisa’s career in the financial services industry spans more than 17 years, during which time she has held roles in various aspects of the industry, including banking, insurance, brokerage and retirement consulting firms.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Master of Science in Human Resource Development, as well as multiple financial planning designations including Chartered Financial Consultant (CFC) and, most recently, Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

No matter the topic, Lisa says her presentations are highly interactive. “I strive to make it informative, but also entertaining,” she said. “Everyone gets a workbook. We do group activities and we break into groups during the presentation. We aim to motivate you into action.”

Lisa’s passion for helping people is evident when she describes her work. “When I make a presentation or meet with people, I believe I’m making an impact on their habits or their actions that is going to put them on a better path to success,” she said. “It’s reinforcing to me that I’m making a difference.”

About The Workshops

She’s Got It: A Woman’s Guide to Saving and Investing
October 8    3:00 - 4:30 p.m.

In this program you will:
  • review the simple secrets to saving more
  • learn the core concepts that guide all investing
  • find ways to take on life's challenges without damaging future financial well-being
  • discover more about yourself with the Financial Personality Type Quiz
  • break down what your real goals are and learn how to reach them
  • get motivated, build a plan, and take action.
Everyone needs to invest in her or his own financial future, but women have some special challenges. Lisa explained that women on average are out of the workforce eight years longer than men and live about five years longer than men. At the same time, their average lifetime incomes are 15 percent lower.

“These realities are a factor for women in their financial planning,” Lisa told us. “So, while a lot of what we discuss is relevant to everyone, we customize this workshop to the challenges that women face.”

Men are welcome to come to this presentation.

Money at Work 1:  Foundations of Investing
October 9    8:30 - 10:00 a.m.

This session is part of the Financial Essentials series from TIAA-CREF.  In this program you will:

  • learn the definitions of – and differences in - investment vehicles
  • review investment risks and find your risk tolerance
  • discover which investment vehicles best fit your needs
  • see how savings principals apply to short-term and long-term goals.

This program assumes attendees have at least a minimal level of investing knowledge.

“We want to reinforce what you’re doing and introduce some new strategies,”
Lisa said. “We go over concepts like dollar cost averaging and the benefits of considering a Roth IRA. Maybe you’re already doing them but it’s a good reminder.”

Lisa also reviews the role of Social Security in your retirement savings plan, and looks at some of the rules of thumb about how much you should be saving.

The Help Desk
October 8     1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
October 9    10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Lisa provides a help desk prior to or after her presentations for individual questions. Common questions include: When is the right time to start drawing my Social Security? and How do I know if I’m investing properly?

“It’s a walk up opportunity,” she said. “Sometimes that extra way of answering a question can be the start of a longer conversation, though. Then I’ll suggest a one-on-one counseling appointment.”

At Lehigh, you have semi-monthly opportunities for one-on-one appointments. Our TIAA-CREF financial counselor visits the Human Resources office twice monthly, offering you and your spouse or partner the chance to take a more in-depth look at your personal finances and retirement plan.
