Celebratory Breakfast Honors Staff Award Recipients

Print Article

As has become a summer time tradition, winners of Lehigh’s annual staff awards gathered for a breakfast celebration of their accomplishments in July. Invitees included staff members who received Tradition of Excellence and Spot Bonus honors. This is the tenth anniversary of the Tradition of Excellence and Spot Bonus Awards programs.

This year for the first time, the recipients of Department of Athletics’ special awards for team coaches joined the event. Among the awardees this year were also a group of Superstorm Sandy Superstars who pitched in to help the campus, our students and their parents in the aftermath of the devastating fall 2012 event.

The Lehigh University Tradition of Excellence Awards launched in January 2003. A committee of representative staff from across the University gathered to develop the program. It is now managed by a representative committee of staff including past recipients of this award. Anyone may nominate deserving staff. Since the program’s inception 709 employees have received individual and/or team awards.

Honorary Tradition of Excellence Awards were presented to Peggy Plympton, vice president for Finance and Administration and Jackie Matthews, associate vice president for Human Resources. Peggy and Jackie, who are both leaving Lehigh, were two of the masterminds behind the Tradition of Excellence and Spot Bonus Award programs. The committee wanted to recognize them and thank them for their support and contributions to the programs.

In the spring of 2003, Lehigh senior leadership announced the Spot Bonus program. A committee of three senior administrators manages this program that recognize staff who significantly contribute to a strategic initiative or program. Only supervisors may nominate individual staff members and the nomination is reviewed and endorsed by the respective department and stem leadership. To date 304 individuals have received a Spot Bonus award.

Nominate A Colleague For The Tradition of Excellence Awards

Anytime you catch a colleague in the act of being awesome, consider nominating him or her for a Tradition of Excellence Award.

The Lehigh Tradition of Excellence Award program was designed to honor full and part-time staff members (exempt, nonexempt, research) who exemplify through their character, job performance, or team work, the Core Values that the university embraces.

Nominations are accepted year-round and awards are announced in spring and fall.
