Four Ways To Get On Top Of Your Retirement Planning

Print Article

Dow 13,000? The S&P 500 at its highest levels in nearly four years?

Perhaps we didn’t see this coming when we were all holding on for dear life last summer.

Still, regardless of its performance, the stock market is just one part of a sound retirement planning strategy. With your Lehigh-funded Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) retirement account and the  Voluntary 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan, you can choose from a variety of investments based on your own situation.  And, understanding Social Security and Medicare a little better can help to fill out the financial-retirement planning picture.

National Retirement Planning Week is April 9 to 13

Having retirement investment choices is a good thing. It can also be confusing and time consuming to wade through so many options. But if you want to retire with financial security, it’s important to take responsibility and plan for the future.

To assist you, Lehigh Human Resources (HR) is sponsoring three retirement and financial planning seminars in honor of National Retirement Planning Week in April. Select one or more session that fits your schedule and register now at HR Training Registration.

Charting Your Course:  A Financial Guide for Women
April 12, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Women often spend years at a time out of the workforce, raising families or caring for family members.  In addition, they often live longer than men.  These realities can affect your retirement planning. This seminar is part of TIAA-CREF’s Core Savings Series.  It focuses on key aspects of managing one’s finances while incorporating these and other issues of particular interest to women.

Topics include:

  • Evaluating your financial health
  • Setting financial goals
  • Making your money work for you
  • Your plan: putting it all together.

Simplifying Social Security
April 19, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Back by popular demand, this workshop is led by an expert from the Social Security Administration.

Topics include:
  • When and how to file for your benefits
  • How your benefit is calculated
  • Rules for receiving benefits while working
  • Benefits for spouses, children, and widows/widowers
  • Medicare enrollment.

Your Retirement, A Personal Journey
April 26, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Retirement planning is a long term process.  Waiting to approach it until it’s only a few years away is like planting your garden in July and wondering why there’s no harvest in August.  So, whether or not you’re approaching retirement, this seminar will help you understand the settlement options available to you  for your Lehigh pension account.  Understanding them now will help you decide where to invest for your own future.

Topics include:
  • How to plan what’s best for you in the years to come
  • Examining retirement planning at all stages
  • Identifying savings gaps that can prevent you from reaching your retirement goals
  • The importance of choosing income options based upon individual needs
  • A comprehensive discussion of income options offered by TIAA-CREF.
